Catalyst Restorations

Добавлен 23 июл 2020
There's new life waiting under that rust. You are the catalyst to make it a reality.
Q: "Why don't you use a sandblaster to remove paint and rust? It's so much faster!"
Q: "Why don't you use powder coating for painting? It's much more durable!"
A: Catalyst Restorations makes restorations fun and accessible to *anyone* with some basic tools and a little bit of space looking to start their own restoration projects. You don't need a $10,000 workshop to do your own restorations! Restorations are meant to bring something back to life to be used or played with again, not just for museum pieces.
New videos monthly.
Got something you want to see me restore on the channel? Send me an email with your request and I can provide the Catalyst Restorations PO Box address! Note: I cannot return your restored items to you.

Garbage to Gold: Ball Peen Hammer Restoration
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Месяц назад
Not every restoration has to be massive - sometimes the small ones bring me the most joy because they’re often overlooked. This old 19 oz ball peen hammer was in an old toolbox full of tools that I purchased for $5. I’ve used it in many other restorations featured on this channel until finally it decided that it wanted to be the star of the show! My DIY electrolysis setup for just $20: ruclips....
Rust Removal BATTLE: Evapo-Rust vs. Electrolysis vs. xTool F1 Portable Laser
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.2 месяца назад
Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. In other words, today I'm using nothing more than some fancy LIGHT to remove decades of dirt, paint, and rust from an old Ridgid pipe wrench. The xTool F1 Portable Laser has both a 10W diode laser and 2W infrared laser to cut, etch, engrave, and in my case, remove rust! For these experiments, I used the 10W diode laser at 100% power. What...
Restoring Grandpa's 80-year-old Family Heirloom Wheelbarrow

It finally happened - Catalyst Restorations is now welding capable! I can’t think of a more worthy first project than restoring my grandpa’s vintage wheelbarrow that’s been in the family for over 80 years now. I “restored” it once myself previously (before Catalyst Restorations) but it wasn’t a true restoration (all I did was put a fresh coat of paint on it). I’m so happy with how this one turn...

1930's "Zero" Electric Fan Complete Restoration
Просмотров 138 тыс.11 месяцев назад
This McGraw Electric Company "Zero" electric fan was manufactured somewhere between the 1930's and mid 1950's. In the 1957 the McGraw Electric Company was bought by the Thomas A. It was being sold just as a rustic decorative piece and the cord had been completely snipped o...

Drill Press Lamp Restoration. You asked for it!

Truthfully I don't know much about how this gooseneck clamp light came to be a permanent fixture of my grandpa's drill press, but it's always been ingrained in my mind whenever I thought of the drill press. Много лишней работы!!!
Sometimes you gotta go the extra mile!
That's why the brass - old Ford
Love it!
Of course, 30 minutes is not nearly enough time for Evaporust to work.
Not usually, no. With agitation and heat it does work considerably quicker than if it's cold and sitting still in a jar though.
Well done.
Thanks for watching!
@CatalystRestorations you did a great job! I bet you felt like a kid at Christmas with the new machine! Guess your wire wheel got hungry...bahaha. hope you were not hurt. I saw a video with a guy who put super glue on both sides of all his wire wheels to make them last longer...hope that helps you. Evapo rust and metal rescue rocks! I love the fact I can filter it and reuse it! Safe to touch too. Great stuff!!
Thanks for watching! Any time I get a new toy to play with like this it feels like Christmas! Good tip on the wire wheel too, thanks.
@@CatalystRestorations I know exactly what you mean! I got so excited the other day when my first ever toggle clamps came! I've done lots of Jerry rigging before but I've never made any jigs for woodworking. I'm trying to start my own woodworking business repurposing and refurbishing items to keep them out of the landfill. I only found your channel today...glad I did. Looks like you get excited about finding maker marks like me! I love seeing damage disappear.
@@fdort3971 very cool!! I love finding a good maker's mark, it's like a treasure hunt!
@@CatalystRestorations exactly!
Beautiful work! You brought that lantern back to life!
Thanks for watching!
Just restored my 2nd vintage fan. Idk what you did but this sounds horrible.
ok
I have this same model!
That's awesome!!! Such a great little piece of history and so sturdy!
I think you did a very nice job.
Thank you, Bob!
Beautifully done! 😊
Thank you Veronica!
Beautiful job. It looks great.
Thanks Jerry! Appreciate you watching.
It's cool video for the restoration. But who would use such a tool. So much Grapefruit flesh wasted by that tool. I would never use this. I peel mine like an orange.
Fun fact, grapefruits have been selectively bred so well since the 1920's that most don't even have a real "core" anymore that has to be removed! Even on the one in this video it's a huge waste to core out the tiny center!
Very nice restoration of that Zero fan. I saw it today and i rate it 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
5/5 sharks?! That's FINtastic!
Would you restore the one I have for a fee? It is for personal use. Ty
I'm afraid that even for something like this the fee I have to charge for my time would be way more than it's worth. If you're still interested though, send me an email: catalystrestorations@gmail.com
5:13 - We've all been there! :D
Many times, in my case! 😅
It's better to buy a new one.
I saved 40+ tools and a toolbox that were part of our family's history. Sometimes it's worth it.
Olağanüstü güzel oldu.. Kutlarım..
Thank you for watching!
Another wanabe who thinks cleaning and polishing is a restoration.
Another commenter who thinks they're the gatekeeper of what is and isn't a restoration
@@CatalystRestorations The truth hurts, face facts...this isnt a restoration. 25 thousand people must enjoy watching you clean
@@Gavlarr82 great, then 25,000 people subscribe to watch me clean old stuff. I really couldn't care less what people call what I do, they like it and they watch it, but I'm confused as to why it matters so much to you to take the time to write comments like these. Like, what's your point Gavin? Are you upset your COD career didn't take off because your one video on your channel only got literally 1 view in the last 9 years?
@@CatalystRestorations Hahaha Im not the one trying to make a living from it. The point is that you shouldnt be posting "Restoration Videos"... You clearly do care, hense the poor attempt at an insult.
@@Gavlarr82 .....do you think everyone who makes RUclips videos are all doing it to make a living? This is a hobby. I do this for fun in my spare time and my hobby pays for itself, which is more than a trolling commenter hobby pays
I think our friends playing the game
I don't know what this means, but for anyone else reading this you just lost the game
I enjoyed watching your techniques before going to bed. Forget the pimple popper channels! Excellent work! I can’t believe something was found before my time. But the green paint gave me a sense of childhood. Our refrigerator was that color. 👍
And I enjoyed reading this comment in bed! Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed a bit of warm, fuzzy nostalgia. 🤗
Nicely done. Glad you were able to rework the manufacturer's tags to your standards. 👍
Thanks for watching! 😁
I really liked the test matrix you came up with for the rust removal experiment
Thanks! It's also very useful for determining optimal laser settings for engraving on different materials, not just rust removal!
Nice job, I like seeing what’s out there on the tool and equipment side of restoration.
Me too! Thanks for watching!
You know, if that was your biggest restoration mistake, it says a ton about the quality of your work! A name plate, for crying out loud!
I make a lot of mistakes, but this one always stood out to me personally as not good enough - I knew I had to revisit it at some point!
So your channel is called “Catalyst Restorations”. Right! So how is replacing an original tag with a laser created piece restoration? 🤔
Darn, guess I have to rename the channel to Catalyst Recreations now
@@CatalystRestorations or actually restore items instead of replacing them… 🤔
@@TheGateway62 I would avoid basically every large restoration channel out there then 😬
@@CatalystRestorations that is your opinion. And we all know what opinions are like… Anyway, you should take some time to educate yourself by watching channels like Veradona Restorations. Maybe then you would understand what restoration actually means…
@@TheGateway62 I think maybe we should stop gatekeeping restorations
I'm all in on people using new things to restore old things. Great job.
One new thing will be invaluable to restore many old things!
I found what you did with the laser to be fascinating. Especially the first job and getting a better restoration on that pencil sharpener's name plate.
Thanks! A niche, but extremely useful tool in more complex restorations!
I hated these things. Completely useless at sharpening my pencils.
Maybe user error? (kidding! 😂)
@@CatalystRestorations idk they were pushing 50 years old when I was using them in school so they were probably just worn out by then.
Things you do for sponsors, amiright? lol Great job with the laser engravings.
Haha, ain't that the truth. Time to get back to the basics though for a while! Thanks as always, Mark!
This is the second (and final) of two videos featuring the xTool F1 Laser Engraver. xTool asked for two videos, so now we're done with that and can get back to regular restoration content! Super excited for the next project on deck, don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss it!
Belo restauro 👏👏👏
Thank you!
Byborne video.sleduji.❤❤❤
Amazing work on the tools and the toolbox. Better history learnt here.
Thanks for watching!
I would put plastic instead of wood. Here in Russia, bronze or brass wires are very difficult to find.
I get that!
Looking good .Not sure I would hammer my pulleys a 2x4 or pry with a chisel though. That being said we all have to use what we got. Informative video. THX
Wow great work
Thanks Michael!
What's the point of initial bath if you just gonna sand everything away later?
Looking for maker's marks, stamps, anything for identifying age or who made it, if possible. If you just start grinding and sanding on a super dirty surface you're probably going to sand right through it.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😮😮😮😅😅🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 pick me please 🥺
Cool paint job, but, will that make it go faster?
It makes every tool you store inside go faster when you use them
For the paint you could try to go about it as you would with like car paint. Im not super knowledgeable about tool restoration, but with cars, if you do about 2-3 layers of paint, then wet sand with a high grit and polish, it gives a glossy finish.
Yes, that does work to give it the ultimate shine!
Every Tool that was shown on this Video was the cheapest available. Buying cheap tools is False Economy. You do great work so use great Tools. “Spindle” that’s a Step Pulley. Buy yourself a “Puller” as one of these days you are going to break an item you are trying remove. Just friendly advice.
Everybody has to start somewhere, Nigel. Just some friendly advice.
Excellent work
Thank you, Sally!
How the heck did you see 19 on the hammer?? It didn't look nothing like 19 to me LOL It looks excellent and you did a wonderful job restoring and Japanning it as well!!!! I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
I have special eyes 👁️👄👁️
Beautiful job. Fun to use the tools in the box on the project.
Thanks! This was such a fun project!
Another wonderful restoration. If it was my hammer I'd leave the handle alone, it looks great. It is, after all, a working tool, not a trailer queen!
Thanks Bryson!
Una buena arenada con arena super fina en general la caja de herramientas queda como unos zapatos recién lustrados ja ja ja que ganas de aserlo tan largo el video ja ja
Tbh ı can never guess that it’s come from a model t impressive
Npc ahh comment but ı really impressed lamo
I had no idea either when I first got it!
Great job. The sporty racing stripes makes it look like my first Fender Mustang guitar!
Very nicely done. What did you mean by the Evaporust needs to be below the surface of the water for the sound waves?
When the Evapo-Rust was in the aluminum tray floating on the top of the water the ultrasonic waves aren't really able to transfer into the Evapo-Rust as well as if the Evapo-Rust was "in" the water. Think of it like if you're in a pool floating on the surface and someone below you underwater is yelling your name (sound waves)- you won't be able to hear it nearly as well as if you were underwater with them and they yell your name.
